Delta Whitehead Named DAISY Award Recipient
9/8/2023
Delta Whitehead, LPN, has been named Flowers Hospital’s latest recipient of the DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the care and compassion nurses display each day. Whitehead has been employed with Flowers Hospital for six years and currently works in the 4 North med/surg patient care area.
Whitehead was nominated for the award by a patient in recognition of her compassion, kindness and encouragement. The patient stated, “Delta encompasses all that a nurse should be. She was caring, encouraging, compassionate, honest, and loving, and she treated me with so much dignity. I am not sure that you will ever truly understand the extreme level of care Delta gave me because it can only be measured by my heart.”
Dan Cumbie, chief nursing officer at Flowers Hospital, said, “Delta has always been dedicated to providing an exceptional level of care to her patients, and I am proud to see her being recognized in this way with such a special award. We are blessed to have Delta and many like her at Flowers Hospital.”
The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died in late 1999 at the age of 33 from complications of an autoimmune disease. DAISY is an acronym for “Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem.” The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patients’ families.
Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, CEO, and co-founder of the DAISY Foundation said, “When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced firsthand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet, these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Flowers Hospital are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”
Flowers Hospital nurses work to provide skillful and compassionate care each day. Patients, visitors, families, nurses, physicians, and employees may nominate a deserving nurse by completing a nomination form here.
