Student Volunteers
Teen Volunteer Program
Our summer teen volunteer program offers teens ages 14 to 17 the opportunity to learn firsthand about the healthcare industry and the services provided to patients. Through this program, our teen volunteers gain the satisfaction of community service by serving others in need while acquiring new friendships and skills along with learning about potential careers in healthcare. The teen volunteer uniform is t-shirt (provided by Flowers Hospital), khaki or black pants and closed-in, comfortable shoes. Two 4-hour shifts per week are required with opportunity for vacation time if needed.
Teen volunteers may serve in the following areas:
- Nursing units: Volunteers provide assistance to patients under the direction of nurses. There is no hands-on care. Areas in which volunteers may assist include sitting with patients when family members are not available, serving drinks and meal trays as requested and assisting in getting necessary supplies.
- Clinical areas: Volunteers assist with preparation in examination rooms by restocking linens as well as supplies for each room, picking up supplies from other departments as needed and assisting the department secretaries with general office duties.
After volunteering during the summer program, some of our teens choose to continue volunteering throughout the school year. Once a volunteer has become established in one of our hospital’s areas, a year-round schedule can be planned.
Spring Into Healthcare
During spring break, high school students, at least 15 years of age, have the opportunity to spend time with healthcare professionals in a variety of areas in the hospital which may assist them in making a future career choice.
In order to participate, students must meet all of the requirements outlined in the teen volunteer application. In addition to the information found in the online application, the high school’s guidance counselor will be able to assist with the application process for this program. To become a Spring Into Healthcare participant, please follow the process below:
- Complete the packet for Spring Into Healthcare students. This form must be signed by the student as well as the student’s parent and school teacher/counselor.
- Call the volunteer services department at (334) 794-5000, ext. 8235 to schedule a time for a drug screen and TB skin test, performed by the employee health nurse.
- Bring payment for the required drug screen and background check (if 18 years of age or older) to the volunteer services department when returning the completed application. Required testing will be scheduled no later than two weeks prior to your scheduled spring break.
- At the time of the drug screen and TB skin test, you will be given an orientation packet which will need to be returned no later than your first day. A t-shirt and identification badge will also be provided at that time. If your paperwork is not returned by the first day, you will not be able to participate until all appropriate paperwork is returned.
