Naomi Ellison, RN, Named Flowers Hospital Nursery Director
Dothan, AL (December 17, 2012) – Naomi Ellison, RN, has been named Flowers Hospital’s Nursery Director. As the new director, Ellison will work directly with her staff, pediatricians and obstetricians to ensure that goals and objectives for quality patient care are consistently met when taking care of newborns. Her promotion to director was effective on December 2, 2012.
Ellison brings to this position a diverse viewpoint from several nursing disciplines. Ellison graduated from Wallace College in June 1997 with her Associate Degree in Nursing. When she started nursing school, her youngest daughter was only a year old and Ellison learned to juggle several demands on her time that translate well in a nursing leadership position. After graduation, Ellison worked for Flowers Hospital on 4 North on the 11p-7a shift. This busy medical-surgical unit gave her an introduction to bedside nursing. One year later, she transferred to a day position on 2 South which specializes in women’s health and here Ellison found the joys of nursing that come from working with moms and babies. After working on 2 South for three years, Ellison had a second daughter and began working with hospice. Having lost her mother to cancer when she was only fifteen gave Ellison empathy for her patients and families. Transitioning from the hospice setting to the hospital setting, Ellison went to work for a long term acute care facility. Ellison returned to her roots at Flowers Hospital in 2010 as the Clinical Supervisor on 2 South. When the Nursery Director position came open, several staff members from Nursery approached Naomi, encouraging her to apply for the position.
She was the perfect candidate for the position says Dan Cumbie, Chief Nursing Officer at Flowers Hospital, “Naomi consistently exemplifies attributes that all nurses should aspire to achieve. She approaches patient care as being an opportunity to serve others in need. Her servant’s heart combined with clinical expertise will serve her well as the Nursery Director. We look forward to working with Naomi and are proud to have her on our leadership team.”
When asked about her career choices, Ellison says, “God led me to this. It is where I was meant to be. Anytime you can enter a patient’s life, do the right thing and see them smile, you know that the work you are called to is meaningful and rewarding.”
“Throughout Naomi’s career at Flowers Hospital, we have received numerous positive patient comments on her nursing and leadership skills. Her kindness and attention to detail make her well suited to care for the youngest of our patients in the newborn nursery,” commented Suzanne Woods, CEO.
Ellison has been married to her husband Jeffrey for nineteen years and they have two daughters, Omega, 18 and Amelia, 12. Mr. Ellison is a mathematics teacher and coach for Houston County High School. He has recently earned his Master’s Degree. Growing up in this medical and academic environment has had an effect on Omega, a senior and cheerleader at Headland High School who wants to become an Obstetrical and Gynecology physician. Ellison and her family attend Balkum Baptist Church.
We are proud to have nurses of Ellison’s caliber at Flowers Hospital and look forward to her nurturing the next generation of our Flowers Hospital family.
