Dothan, Ala. – Flowers Hospital provided care to thousands of area residents in 2024, with more than 400,000 patient encounters across its network of physician clinics and other outpatient sites of care. In addition to delivering safe, quality, compassionate healthcare, the health system is helping those in need, supporting charitable organizations and contributing to the area economy. In its most recent Community Benefit Report, Flowers Hospital’s impact totaled an estimated $261 million in 2024.
Flowers Hospital also celebrated significant milestones, such as performing its first transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), performing 10,000 robotic assisted surgeries, the opening of the hospital-affiliated Jersey College School of Nursing campus in Dothan and receiving an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group. Additionally, the hospital recruited physicians specializing in general surgery, endocrinology, urology, pulmonology, family medicine and internal medicine to the Wiregrass making it easier for patients to access specialized and primary care close to home.
“Our work to grow and enhance the medical services we provide is ongoing, as we continuously improve our safety and quality and support access to healthcare for our community,” said Steve Gordon, chief executive officer of Flowers Hospital. “This year, as we recognize the 75th anniversary of Flowers Hospital, we are proud of the impact our hospital has made on the health, well-being and quality of life in the Wiregrass area."
Flowers Hospital’s emergency room provides lifesaving, medically necessary care at more than 39,000 patient encounters each year, treating all patients regardless of their ability to pay. In 2024, Flowers Hospital provided more than $120 million in charity and uncompensated care and provided resources to help patients in need secure medications and medical support devices.
The health system and its employees also support local organizations that make a difference, especially those addressing social determinants of health. Through service projects such as the annual Jars of Love Peanut Butter drive for the Wiregrass Area Food Bank and contributions to charitable organizations such as the Wiregrass United Way and Southeast Alabama Child Advocacy Center, Flowers Hospital gives back to the community throughout the year.
To enhance patient care and expand healthcare access, Flowers Hospital is investing in medical services, facilities and technologies. Capital projects in 2024 totaled more than $3.5 million and included upgrades to surgical equipment as well as operating suites and procedural areas. The addition of a hybrid cardiac catheterization lab to the hospital’s Heart and Vascular Institute allowed more Wiregrass area residents to receive life-saving heart care locally.
The hospital’s employed physician network continues to grow with 16 providers joining Flowers Medical Group in 2024 and additional providers scheduled to join in 2025. Flowers Medical Group acquired Wiregrass Surgical, a general surgery and bariatric surgery physician clinic in May 2024 and Women’s Healthcare of Dothan, an obstetrics and gynecology physician clinic in March 2025. With these acquisitions, the Flowers Medical Group footprint has grown to 11 locations with 54 providers across a variety of medical specialties.
“We are strategically applying our resources to help area residents have access to the care they need close to home,” said Gordon. “These investments, along with our outstanding medical staff and employees, support our delivery of high quality medical care and services for a positive patient experience.”
Flowers Hospital is one of the community’s largest employers with a payroll of approximately $112 million. Support for the future healthcare workforce includes training the next generation of medical professionals. In addition to the collaboration with Jersey College School of Nursing, the hospital maintains strong relationships with other area schools offering nursing and allied health programs. It expanded the size of its internal surgical technician training program to accommodate more students and was one of the first hospitals in Alabama to participate in a student nurse apprentice program with regional colleges. Flowers Hospital also serves as a clinical rotation site for area high school students in healthcare programs.
Along with supporting the local economy through job creation, Flowers Hospital paid more than $18 million in taxes in 2024, monies that support local infrastructure and civic resources.
