Good News for People with Parkinson's Disease
9/10/2014
DOTHAN, AL (September 3, 2014) - Three employees of the Outpatient Rehabilitation and Fall Prevention Center at Flowers Hospital recently earned certification to administer LSVT BIG. Lee Silverman Voice Treatments (LSVT LOUD® for speech therapists and LSVT BIG® for physical therapists) provide an innovative and clinically-proven method for improving communication and movement in individuals with Parkinson's disease. The program also has applications for other neurological conditions. LSVT certified therapists train people with Parkinson's disease in intensive whole body amplitude-based training and specific speech interventions. In addition to the three new LSVT-BIG therapists, Brooke Preston has been LSVT-LOUD certified since 2013.
Research suggests that Parkinson patients should not wait until they begin to experience disability, impaired function or loss of balance to start exercise-based physical and occupational therapy. LSVT BIG techniques train individuals with Parkinson's and other neurological conditions to use bigger movements anywhere, anytime in daily living.
"We are proud of our employee's' accomplishment. The program empowers our patients with the potential they have to keep moving and stay active," said Suzanne Woods, CEO of Flowers Hospital.
