Flowers Hospital Celebrates Opening of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
6/12/2017
Flowers Hospital celebrated the opening of its Level IIB Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with a ribbon cutting with the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce on June 6, 2017. Attendees enjoyed refreshments provided by the hospital while networking with other Chamber members and some of the outstanding clinicians who serve the Wiregrass community.
Mary Beth Reynolds, Board of Directors member for the Chamber of Commerce, welcomed guests to Flowers Hospital for the event, and Dan Cumbie, Flowers Hospital chief nursing officer, shared more information about the NICU and its significance.
“Our NICU provides full time coverage by neonatologists, a neonatal nurse practitioner and our specially trained nursing staff,” said Cumbie. “We are proud to be able to bring this service to Wiregrass families so they can remain close to home when their newborn needs a higher level of care.”
Before the addition of a NICU to Flowers Hospital, newborns would be transferred to other facilities, usually several hours away from the Dothan area, to receive more specialized care. Naomi Ellison, the hospital’s director of nursery, labor and delivery and pediatrics, said nearly 50 newborns have received care in the NICU since its opening in March.
Flowers Hospital’s Level IIB NICU is a newly-constructed, 6-bed unit providing care for babies born as early as 32 weeks gestational age. For more information on Flowers Hospitals Women’s and Children’s services, visit www.FlowersHospital.com.
