Gallbladder Surgery
If you have severe gallbladder symptoms, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove your gallbladder. Gallbladder removal, called cholecystectomy, can be performed using open surgery through a large incision or with minimally invasive surgery. With traditional laparoscopic cholecystectomy, several small incisions are made. With single incision laparoscopy and robotic surgery, your surgeon operates through one small incision in the belly button.
Cholecystectomy is usually an outpatient procedure.
Before you decide on surgery, discuss treatment options with your doctor. Understanding the risks and benefits of each treatment can help you make the best decision for your individual situation.
