Lisabeth Elliot Named DAISY Award Recipient
8/12/2022
Lisabeth Elliot, RN has been named Flowers Hospital’s latest recipient of the DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the care and compassion nurses display each day. Elliot has worked with Flowers Hospital since January 2022 and is a nurse on the hospital’s orthopedic floor.
Elliot was nominated for the award by a patient’s family member who wanted to recognize the compassion she displayed while caring for the patient. In the award nomination story, the family member stated, “I remember one morning I was crying when she entered the room because I thought my mother had a stroke in the night.” After explaining the way Elliot cared for the patient she said, “I considered her an angel that morning. I was praying for help, and God put her in our room. This might be little to some people, but to me it was huge. She did everything with a smile and kind words. Lisabeth has a heart for her patients.”
Dan Cumbie, chief nursing officer at Flowers Hospital, said, “Lisabeth truly lives out our mission of caring for our patients as family each day, and we are proud and grateful to have her at Flowers Hospital. She is a shining example of providing compassionate care to both her patients and their families.”
The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died in late 1999 at the age of 33 from complications of an autoimmune disease. DAISY is an acronym for “Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem.” The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patients’ families.
Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, CEO, and co-founder of the DAISY Foundation said, “When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced firsthand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet, these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Flowers Hospital are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”
Flowers Hospital nurses work to provide skillful and compassionate care each day. Patients, visitors, families, nurses, physicians, and employees may nominate a deserving nurse by completing a nomination form here.
