11/27/2018
Flowers Hospital has named its 2018 employee and managers of the year. Bill Woodham, plant operations coordinator, was named the Employee of the Year. Barbara Spann, director of hospitality services, was named Non-Clinical Manager of the Year. Jon Joiner, director of cardiovascular services, was named Clinical Manager of the Year. These awards are the highest honor bestowed on hospital staff members and were announced at a special ceremony in October.
“Healthcare requires a special blend of talents and skills, including the ability to work well under pressure and deadlines,” said Heath Phillips, Flowers Hospital chief executive officer. “Among all the skills needed to succeed in our industry, the desire to help others always shines through and is exemplified in these employees. We are proud to be able to recognize Bill, Barbara and Jon for their dedication to our patients and staff and for their passion for helping those around them.”
Bill Woodham, 2018 Employee of the Year
Woodham joined Flowers Hospital in 1998 and currently serves as a Plant Operations Coordinator. He oversees the security and safety operations of the facility and is heavily involved with the hospital emergency preparedness plans and actions as well as Joint Commission readiness operations. Co-workers say he can be found at all hours of the day and night performing necessary tests or other functions to ensure the safety of our patients, employees and facility. Benton Cybulsky, Flowers Hospital assistant chief executive officer, says that he is an exceptional colleague and goes above and beyond every day.
Barbara Spann, RD, LD, Non-Clinical Manager of the Year
As the director of hospitality services, Spann is responsible for planning, directing, organizing and providing environmental, food service and nutritional care to patients, staff and visitors of all ages. Spann’s co-workers describe her as having a “can do” attitude and someone who rolls up her sleeves to get the job done when unexpected changes come her way. Spann is a member of the Personnel Board for the City of Dothan and a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and Quality Resource Group for Flowers Hospital. She joined Flowers Hospital in 1998 as the chief clinical dietician before being promoted to assistant director and director of hospitality services.
Jon Joiner, RN, Clinical Manager of the Year
Joiner is the director of cardiovascular services and has been employed at Flowers Hospital since 1982 when he started as an orderly. He has served in various roles including working as a nurse and EMT/monitor technician and has also worked in various intensive care units while at Flowers. One of the qualities Joiner is most noted for is his passion for his patients and staff as he often acts as a personal support system for those around him. Joiner’s staff members say he treats them and patients alike as if they were personal family members. He serves as a board member for the Southeast Alabama Dance Company and a member of the Quality Resource Group, Medicine Committee and Opioid Stewardship Committee at Flowers Hospital.
“There is no doubt that all of these employees embody the very qualities Dr. Flowers had in mind when he founded our hospital many years ago,” said Phillips. “Bill, Barbara and Jon are all very well respected by their peers and employees throughout our hospital. I am proud to have them at Flowers and proud to call them all friends.”
